Clarion LARP CIC

Our Community Interest Statement

We are a Community Interest Company. This means that Clarion LARP operates as a limited company, but without the aim of making profit or personal gain. All of our events are designed to break even financially, with any residual money re-invested into new events. The company directors do not make money from organising Clarion LARP events.

What does our company do?

  • Clarion LARP CIC designs, organises, and delivers live-action roleplay (LARP) events, creative workshops, and immersive storytelling experiences. These events bring people together to collaboratively explore Scottish landscapes, folklore, and culture through interactive play. We engage both Scottish and international participants. Our main focus is Scottish culture and history, however we also collaborate with other similar groups across the UK when appropriate.

  • We are active in the LARP community; attending and contributing to various forums including conferences, meetings and other events where we can help to raise the profile of Scottish LARP.

  • We contribute to the development of accessibility in LARP through our own events, as well as through engagement with the wider LARP community.

Our activities include...

  • Running LARP events in diverse Scottish locations, from urban spaces to historic sites and rural venues.

  • Developing storylines and character experiences inspired by Scottish history, mythology, and contemporary culture.

  • Providing opportunities for volunteers, writers, and creatives to contribute to event design and delivery.

  • Hosting affordable and inclusive community gatherings that promote creativity, confidence, and wellbeing.

  • Collaboration with other UK LARP organisers to bring our games to a wider UK audience, including running events and workshops in areas outside of Scotland.

  • Attending and contributing to events, conferences or other forums in order to raise to profile of Scottish LARP and LARP accessibility in general.

Who benefits from our activities?

  • Members of the public interested in creative and social recreation.

  • Scottish communities and venues that host events, benefiting from local tourism and engagement.

  • Artists, craftspeople, and volunteers involved in designing costumes, props, and narratives.

  • Individuals in the LARP community who may be seeking inclusive, safe spaces to connect with others through shared storytelling.

Participation is open to all, regardless of background, ability, or experience. Concession and volunteer options will ensure accessibility for those on lower incomes.

How does the community benefit?

  • Cultural engagement: Our events highlight and celebrate Scotland’s landscapes, history, and stories, fostering pride and creative participation in local culture.

  • Accessibility & inclusion: We are committed to running events that are both inclusive and affordable. If a venue or event is particularly expensive or physically inaccessible, we will aim to run a second version that achieves greater affordability and access.

  • Safety & empathy: we are committed to exploring difficult historical and fictional themes in a respectful and thoughtful way that ensures participants feel safe to open themselves up to new experiences and new ideas. We listen to feedback and take reports of misconduct seriously.

  • Social wellbeing: Clarion LARP events promote teamwork, empathy, and confidence through shared narrative experiences.

  • Local economic benefit: By partnering with Scottish venues, accommodation providers, and suppliers, we support local economies and sustainable tourism.

How do we ensure that the company acts for the benefit of the community?

Clarion LARP CIC operates on a not-for-profit basis.

  • All surpluses is reinvested into community benefit- for example it is used to improve accessibility, develop props and equipment, subsidise participation costs, and expand the range of inclusive events we can offer.

  • We maintain a clear asset lock ensuring that, if the company is wound up, its remaining assets will be transferred to another CIC, charity, or non-profit organisation with similar community aims.

  • The company’s constitution prevents the distribution of profits to members or directors beyond reasonable payments for work performed.

  • Annual reports to the CIC Regulator describe how our activities have benefited the community and advanced our objectives of accessibility, inclusion, and celebration of Scottish culture.

Tell us a little about the types of events that Clarion LARP organises...

The Locations: We are inspired by locations. We visit places that have borne witness to some of the most pivotal events in history, and we want to have a conversation with that history. We visit places that inspire stories of the far future, and we want to explore the possibilities. Wherever possible, we will use a venue that is both inspiring and accessible. If there are significant compromises that must be made, we will organise 2 runs of the game; including one that prioritises physical/financial accessibility. We have written more about our Two Sites Model here.

The Characters: Characters in our games are partially pre-written. This means they have several points of known history, along with established positive and negative relationships with other game characters. Participants can read a brief summary of the characters when they sign up, and will be offered a specific character before we ask them to pay us any money. We will then work with our participants to fine-tune their character, fleshing out their motivations and connections to other characters. Player input is essential to the character creation process and we will always aim to create the right character for the every player.

The GamesOur games are always centred on an event; a decision to be made or important action to be taken. Characters come together with conflicting worldviews and old grudges. Add in dark secrets and hidden agendas, making everything more deliciously complicated.

Collaboration: This is a central concept to the games we want to run. There will rarely, if ever, be anything that characters can solve or 'win'. These are not puzzle games or battle games where you can prevail by reaching a certain goal. Instead, we want to bring together a group of people who can work together to tell a story. Fans of 'Nordic LARP' will often recognise that there is lots of fun and fulfilment to be had when characters struggle, change their minds, or even 'fail' at their initial in-game objectives.

I'm queer, disabled, and a postgrad history student. I've been LARPing for over 15 years, and I'm incredibly passionate about telling all kinds of stories through the medium.

I'm a fan of all kinds of LARP, from tiny boutique events to huge festivals. Somehow I always end up playing a grumpy granny...

I've been LARPing since the 90s, and helping to organise events since 2003.
